January 1, 2014

And just like that, 2013 wrapped up and came to an end and here we are with a fresh new year ahead of us...

New years are always exciting, but it takes away from day-to-day changes, accomplishments, etc... for a brief amount of time. I'd be lying if I said I was not excited for what the year holds for me, but I have also been trying to take the past 10 months day by day and that's how I wish to continue to do. Yes, it's a new year, but today was no different than yesterday except for the fact that I slept a little more and didn't have to work. I still woke up today, showered, ate, and talked to the same friends. Just because it's a new year doesn't mean everything has got to change starting now. That's the thing I wish a lot of people would notice and take more advantage of.

I entered 2013 full of hope and thought everything was going my way. However, it turned out, almost all of those didn't go my way. I was pushed down and beaten and I literally thought it was the end of my life. I was humiliated and mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. But I got through it, and 2013 was the biggest year of change for me. However, it didn't start with the brand new year, it started about two-three months in when I realized that I wasn't happy with the way my life was going. Since the end of February, I have been making small changes and adjustments to become a much happier me. I started seeing the positive side of things and I started being a little more carefree. I invested my feelings in relationships that I knew were strong and would last and have become closer with the people that have always been there. I started doing things for me. Yes, I still care about what others may think and their opinions. But at the end of the day, I did what made me happy. It is all still a work in progress and I am trying really hard to become the person I want to be. But I realize that that all won't change in the new year, it's going to take time and for all I know I may not start making more changes until the middle of 2015, who knows. Anyways, all I'm saying is as exciting as making new year resolutions are, don't make them because you think it's what other people want or because you think you have to. Fuck it, you can stay exactly the same and eat the same amount of ice cream and not go to the gym. You can lay in bed all day, if that's really how you want to spend every day. Do what you want, how you want, and when you want, but do it for you.

As for the new year and new semester, I am looking forward to a lot of things...

Once I get back to school I will finally be taking the business program, COB 300, which I worked my ass off for these past two years. I am lucky enough to be in the program with a lot of people I have become close with this past fall semester. My roommate and I are in the same section, so that's exciting!
I also will be matched with my little from the Big Brother Big Sister program. This is one of the greatest opportunities I have had in a long time and I am extremely excited for it! I can't wait to get back to school to meet her.
Within my sorority (Phi Mu), we were just told who were appointed committee positions. I was appointed Assistant Philanthropy, which I am looking forward to so much! I have been on the Philanthropy committee upon joining Phi Mu, and I finally get to put my dedication and excitement for this to use by working under the Philanthropy chair and getting all the new and old members involved with our philanthropy activities!
I've also been thinking about other things I'd like to do this year and I am really interested in doing charity work abroad. I've always thought about teaching English abroad, but I would really love to do anything outside of the US! I think I might also try to start volunteering more around the Harrisonburg community when I'm down at school.

So, that's about it for my new year. I am thankful that I got to ring in the New Year with my good friend Kimberly and spent the day with my family. I hope you all are looking forward to a new chapter in your life as much as I am.

Cheers to the New Year!
